3. Sickness, leave, and the "pro-ration" mismatch
Absence is one of the greatest sources of payroll recalculation. If an employee is logged off sick in the operational rota, but that record does not synchronise in real time with the central employee record, payroll calculations default to standard contracted hours.
Calculating occupational sick pay, statutory entitlements, and starter/leaver pro-rations across differing calendars (such as 260 working days versus 365 calendar days) requires seamless data alignment. When absence records live in an isolated silo, retrospective adjustments become an accepted, exhausting norm.
4. The retrospective shift dilemma
In operational environments (such as logistics, social care, hospitality, and manufacturing) rotas change constantly. A shift worked on the 28th of the month may be signed off by a supervisor on the 2nd of the following month, well past the payroll cut-off date.
Without unified, bi-directional connectivity:
The system cannot automatically carry forward retrospective differences into the next pay cycle.
The payroll team must manually compute historical differences, reverse previous calculations, and process supplementary payments.
